Call for Abstracts          

Authors are invited to submit an abstract in English or French to be considered for making a presentation at the Symposium. The draft Preliminary Program should be consulted to understand the flow of the Symposium. The deadline for submission of abstracts is extended. Authors are asked to submit abstracts using the on-line abstract submission link

Instructions for Submission of Abstracts

Abstracts may be submitted via Internet only. There is no paper form to complete or mail in. Faxed and mailed submissions will not be considered. Only abstracts submitted in the correct format, as outlined below, will be considered.

When preparing to submit their abstract, authors will want to have on hand the complete contact information for the Presenting author (the Corresponding author should be the Presenting author).

Before submitting an abstract, please refer to the Preliminary Program and carefully review the following abstract submission guidelines.

  1. Abstracts must conform to the following outline:
    1. Abstract Title (as it will appear in the Program and Proceedings)
    2. Authors and Institutions
    3. Objectives
    4. Approach or Methods
    5. Results
    6. Conclusion
  2. The abstract body (objectives, methods, results, conclusion) is limited to 250 words. Please submit text only. References, tables, figures or any other graphics are not permitted in the initial abstract submission. Special characters and formatting are not compatible with the on-line submission process. A Template is available and must be saved and filled out for abstract submission. Abstracts must be submitted in MS Word (PC) format.
  3. Brand names may not be used in abstract titles and are limited to one reference within the body.
  4. Total authors are limited to five per abstract.
  5. Limit of one abstract per presenting author.
  6. Identify one contact author to whom Symposium communications will be addressed.
  7. Identify the author who will be presenting the abstract at the Symposium.
  8. Authors may submit up to five keywords that describe the content of the abstract.
  9. Should more abstract be received than can be handled by the Symposium, the Technical Program Committee may be required to assign abstracts to poster sessions under theme T7 and T8.
  10. All fields on the online abstract submission form must be completed. Please print a copy of the abstract submission form for your records prior to clicking the submit button.
  11. Do not resubmit your abstract for any reason other than a notified submission error. If you do not receive a confirmation email with a receipt number that your abstract was successfully uploaded, please contact the Symposium Management Office.
  12. Submitting authors are asked to select the most appropriate session (i.e. theme) from the following list:

    T2. Community involvement in reducing crossing and trespassing incidents
    T3. Crossing and trespassing inventory and safety data on physical characteristics, traffic volumes and collisions
    T4. Best practice outreach principles for risk mitigation geared to communities around railway rights of way
    T5. Best practice principles for benchmarking and evaluating results of investments in crossing and trespassing safety
    T6. Risk assessment and mitigation measures for potential major incidents at crossings
    T7. Engineering and design of infrastructure and systems - Poster presentations.
    T8. Community issues and outreach - Poster presentations
    T9. Motorist and pedestrian understanding and behaviour about railway crossings and rights of way
    T10. Legal framework addressing crossing and trespassing safety and its effectiveness
    T11. Contribution and prevalence of fatigue in crossing incidents and best-practice design to reduce its effects
    T12. Law enforcement best practices and technologies for reducing violations and crossing and trespassing incidents
    T13. Conspicuity and perceptual countermeasures to driver and pedestrian and inattention
    T14. Best practice principles for effective emergency response to railway crossing and trespassing incidents
    T15. Best-practice design of crossings, approaches and railway rights of way for improved safety related decision making and performance
    T16. Reducing negative impacts of crossings and railway rights of way on adjacent communities
    T17. Innovative technologies and approaches to addressing problems associated with crossings and trespassing
    T18. Best practices, cost-benefit, and efficient implementation strategies for effecting grade separations
    T19. Crossing and trespassing issues associated with high speed railway operations
    T20. Crossing closure issues and approaches to implementing successful strategies in collaboration with affected communities
    T21. Use of ITS technologies and real-time information for risk reduction at crossings and railway rights of way
    T22. Risk assessment and prioritization methodologies and funding programs for crossing and trespassing safety improvements
    T23. Dealing with security issues at crossings and railway rights of way (i.e. terrorism & personal injury issues & countermeasures)
    T24. Vandalism and criminal damage of railway and road infrastructure and mitigation measures (i.e. damage & cost related)

Abstract Review
All abstracts are reviewed by the Technical Program Committee. Notice of acceptance will be sent to the corresponding author by email in February 2006. Abstracts will be accepted or rejected at the discretion of the Technical Program Committee. Please do not call regarding the status of your abstract.

Note to Authors
Papers from accepted abstracts will be published in the Symposium Proceedings. Papers must not substantially duplicate work that any of the authors has published elsewhere or has submitted in parallel to any other conference or workshop that has proceedings. Data that have been previously presented elsewhere may be submitted. However, if your abstract is accepted, you will be required to write an original paper.

Submission of an abstract constitutes the commitment of at least one author to register for the Symposium and present the paper, regardless of presentation type (oral or poster) or date/time assigned. Expenses associated with the preparation, submission, and presentation of a paper are the responsibility of the author/presenter.

Agreement/Disclaimer
In submitting an abstract, you certify that the abstract and/or paper is an original contribution that has not been presented or published elsewhere and give permission to the Symposium Organizers to publish it in the Symposium Proceedings CD-Rom and the Symposium Website. You further agree that if your abstract is accepted for presentation, you will be present at the Symposium to present your research.

Abstracts are to be submitted via the Symposium Website (only electronic submissions will be accepted for review).

Furthermore, you understand that your abstract and paper will be published as submitted. The organizers do not accept any responsibility regarding the accuracy of the abstracts and papers submitted.

The organizers reserve the right to reject any abstract and paper at their sole discretion.
